* Teak ( Tectona Grandis )

Teak:

• Species: Tectona Grandis.
• Family: Verbenaceae.
• Common Names: Teak (Trade name), Teck (French), Tiek (German), Teca (Spanish).
• Description: Teak is a genus of tropical hardwood trees, native to the south and southeast of Asia. They are large trees, growing up to 30-40 meters tall in favourable conditions. Crown opens with many small branches. Bole is often buttressed and could be fluted, up to 15 m long below the 1st branches. Bark is brown, distinctly fibrous with shallow, longitudinal fissures. The root system is superficial, often no deeper than 50 cm, but roots may extend laterally up to 15 m from the stem.
  The very large, 4-sided leaves are shed for 3-4 months during the latter half of the dry season, leaving the branchlets bare.
  Teak has a uniform golden-brown color. It is generally straight to wavy grained, coarse textured and oily to the touch. The luster is dull. The wood has a distinctive smell. Teak has excellent strength properties which make the timber so suitable for structural uses. Teak has outstanding durability in regards to wet and dry conditions. It is hard, strong, heavy and very attractive.
  Finally, Teak is a sustainable material. Today, many Teak plantations have been being carried out across Asia, South Africa, etc.
• Use: Teak is best for outdoor furniture and flooring. It is also used for paneling, carvings, turnery, joinery, veneer, plywood and any other exterior projects.
• Density:
  • Green materials: 700 - 800 kg/m3.
  • Dried materials: 600 - 650 kg/m3 (Moisture Content: 12% - 16%).

Teak Root,

Once the teak roots have been collected, each root is then cleaned and all debris is removed and the root is allowed to naturally air-dry.

Nature has a big part to play and may have already crafted the root towards being a table, chair, bench or sculpture. However, it is the eye and skill of the local craftsman who can hand finish the teak root into a stunning piece of furniture or sculpture. Teak root furniture differs from conventional furniture in the fact that it is sculptured and shaped as opposed to assembled and we do not use screws, bolts, nails, glue, joints or seams. Each piece is a naturally unique and an individual creation.

Additionally the teak specie has a great deal of natural beauty and each piece of our teak root furniture will illustrate the bright and beautiful lustre of the sapwood through to the deep rich warm colours of the heartwood. Our root furniture harnesses the natural beauty of teak providing furniture that will be the centrepiece or focal point of any room or garden setting. Teak's natural durability will allow you to use our teak root furniture both internally or externally. If used externally, the rich golden brown colour of the furniture will fade and weather to a silver grey tone and will in time become more characteristic of driftwood. This natural process can be prevented by regular maintenance of furniture and sculptures placed in the garden.
