Acacia Mangium:

• Common Names: black wattle, hickory wattle, brown salwood.

Description: Acacia Mangium is one of the major fast growing species used in plantation forestry programs throughout Asia, the Pacific, and the humid tropics. Due to its rapid growth and tolerance of very poor soils, Acacia Mangium is playing an increasingly important role in efforts to sustain commercial supply of tree products while reducing pressure on natural forest ecosystems.

It is a tree up to 40m (131.23 feet) in height, and the diameter rarely exceeds 60cm (19.7 inches). The trunk can be un-branched for more than half of the total tree height; it is sometimes fluted at the base. The bark is rough and furrowed, either grey or brown. Sapwood is pale yellow to straw-coloured and distinct from the heartwood, which is light to dark brown. Growth rings are indistinct or absent. Texture is fine to moderately coarse and even. Grain usually straight, sometimes interlocked.

• Use: This timber is excellent for outdoor furniture, decking and flooring. It is also good for making cabinets, turnery, particleboard, plywood, veneer, pulp, firewood, and charcoal. Acacia has a dark ash brown tone and is used for furniture, cabinets, turnery, and floors. It is also suitable for veneer. Due to its rapid growth and tolerance of very poor soils, Acacia mangium is playing an increasingly important role in efforts to sustain a commercial supply of tree products while reducing pressure on natural forest ecosystems.
